A High School Dropout Overcame Homelessness And Found His Way Onto The Cover Of A National Magazine

Cory Richards attributes his rise from homelessness to successful photographer to one thing: Discomfort.

Through times of triumph, pain, loss, struggle, happiness and any other form of ‘pure’ emotion, this National Geographic photographer has  “discovered what it’s like to be human.”

While many of us try at all cost to avoid negative emotions, Cory has an opposite ideology–and it has lead him to a very successful and fulfilling path. We can embrace his attitude by viewing tough times as opportunities to get in touch with our true humanity.

“Human emotions can be complicated, confusing, and sometimes even downright ugly. Most of us experience emotions at times that we would rather not have- emotions we mightn’t even want to admit to having. That’s okay. As human beings, we all experience a wide range of emotions.”

…and that’s something we all have in common; that’s what connects us.
