There’s nothing quite like the thrill of qualifying for the Olympics — but Lilly King’s longtime boyfriend, James Wells, certainly managed to make the moment all-the-more special! King is an incredible swimmer. She won two gold medals in the 2016 Summer Olympics and earned two silver medals and one bronze in the postponed 2020 Summer Olympics. Now, she’s back again and ready to compete in Paris! Already qualified for one event, King competed in her hometown of Indianapolis to qualify for a second.

Although there was stiff competition, King secured her spot! This alone would have made for a memorable moment — but James made it even better by asking her to marry him. King had no idea this would be the moment he’d pop the question, but you can tell when she catches on to what’s happening… and it’s adorable! Check out this wholesome moment in the video below.

“I was actually, funnily enough, originally planning to do it after the Paris Games,” James explains. “… And then just seeing Lilly with all of her friends here and kind of in this stadium in her home state, I was like, I think this would be a really special moment that she could share with everyone.”

Meanwhile, King couldn’t be happier by these unexpected turn of events!
