One wheelchair user didn’t feel safe crossing the street from the sidewalk outside his apartment, so he decided to contact the city and let them know what was going on. In his e-mail, Adam explained that the area wasn’t very accessible for people using mobility aids. His city’s response to the message deserves a round of applause! They got to work creating a solution so that wheelchair users could safely and easily cross the street.

In a slideshow on social media, Adam shared how his city began the process of creating a more accessible path from his sidewalk to the one across the street. First, they started digging up some of the grass so that they could install curb ramps. Once that was finished, they started painting the street. Before Adam knew it, there was an accessible crosswalk for wheelchair users right outside his home.
He made his neighborhood safer with one simple e-mail!
This wheelchair user was excited to tell his inspiring story on social media because it proves that “advocacy works.” Thanks to Adam contacting the city about his dangerous sidewalk, his community now has a safe and accessible crosswalk in their area! Commenters on his post praised him for standing up for himself and others with disabilities.
“You not only advocated for yourself but your entire community,” wrote one user.
Another added, “I work for city public works and a lot of the time we don’t know about an issue until a resident points it out. Thank you for making them aware, I’m sure others had the same issue!”
Adam responded in the comments that he had no idea if his request would actually be heard, but he knew he had to give it a shot anyway. Now, he’s really glad he did. It just goes to show you that speaking up is often worth it!
