When this farmer’s dog lost her front legs in an unfortunate accident, her family sought help from a reality television show called The Wizard of Paws. Hosted by prosthetics master Derrick Campana, this program is all about giving disabled animals a chance at a better, more mobile life. That’s exactly what Elvin’s pooch needed after her tragic run-in with a piece of farm equipment. How appropriate that the dog’s name happened to be Toto!

As the pup’s family explained on their episode of The Wizard of Paws, Toto’s accident had occurred in a cornfield by the house, where workers had been cutting down the stalks with machinery. Elvin was devastated when his beloved pup lost her front paws, and even more so when the vet suggested he put her down. However, that wasn’t an option as far as he was concerned. According to him, he could see in this pooch’s expression that she wanted to keep living. In fact, he claimed that her eyes seemed to say, “Don’t do it!”
Thankfully, Derrick Campana agreed to step in and create a special pair of prosthetic legs just for Toto. However, it wasn’t going to be easy. As Derrick explained in this episode of The Wizard of Paws, he was concerned about alleviating pressure from the bottoms of her stumps. He didn’t want this poor dog to be in pain when she used her prosthetic paws, and he definitely didn’t want her to reopen her stitches!
Unfortunately, there was a possibility that Toto wouldn’t “accept” her prosthetics.
Another worry was that Toto wouldn’t adapt to wearing the prosthetics, even if they were comfortable. Derrick admitted that, sadly, not all dogs get used to their new limbs.
“It’s really heartbreaking, but there are some dogs that’ll never accept prosthetics,” he said. “Some dogs will get aggressive, they’ll rip at them, bite at them, and try to tear them off with their teeth.”
Thankfully, though, Toto didn’t seem to mind her new legs. Although she got off to a slightly rocky start, she was soon learning how to walk in the design that Derrick made for her. Elvin and his family couldn’t have been happier with the results!
