When told he had a special visitor Wally responds immediately, getting up and looking around. He did the same when he was told that Grandma was there. We can certainly tell who one of his favorite people is. The blink tests are amazing. He clearly knows what to do to do to get some chicken or popcorn. How does he know how to blink like that on command?
Granted, golden retrievers are intelligent and can learn many tricks. But this dog seems to comprehend what his mom says when she speaks. Wally turns when he is looking in the mirror, and she tells him to look over at her. He could already see her in the mirror but seemed to know that was just a reflection of his Mom.
While it is true that dogs understand some words when we speak through training. Animals can easily learn repeated words like “sit,” “stay,” “walk,” and “down.” But Wally, our happy golden retriever, understands far beyond that capacity.
Some dogs can learn far more than others. Wally seems to have gathered his knowledge from listening when his Mom speaks to him and applying that to what happens next. He has picked up on some, like “Grandma.” This is why dog owners often spell out W-A-L-K or T-R-E-A-T. That wouldn’t work with this service dog who is learning to read.
