Almost everyone knows the story of Little Red Riding Hood. A small child leaves home with a basket of goodies to visit her grandma. Along the way, she encounters dangers and has a showdown with a big, bad wolf. While that is fiction, it gives parents pause when they consider letting their children explore life independently. Missy Lanning allows her toddler to walk to her grandma’s house every day.

In the story, Little Red Riding Hood had to go through woods and over a creek. Missy’s daughter, Brielle, only has to cross a field and down a slight slope. She is never out of sight, but her display of independence is amazing. One of the commenters suggested putting a microphone on her to see if she chatters to herself. So Missy obliged with a camera.
The result was the most adorable three minutes on TikTok. Escorted by the family dogs and followed (not so closely) by Mom, Little Brielle slowly made her way across the field. Along the way, she chattered quietly with herself and talked to the puppies. She pointed out some dog poop at one point. Her squeaky little voice is so precious it just melts hearts.
We don’t know if she was tired or maybe got a rock in her shoe, but she says, “Ow” several times as she nears Mimi’s house. Once her Grandma opens the door, Brielle’s pace quickens, and she stops saying, “Ow.” The brave little toddler takes this walk every day by herself.
As a parent, finding ways to allow your children to express independence is essential. We’re glad Missy shared her toddler’s independent walk with us.
