Miners Discover Perfectly Heart-Shaped Amethyst Within Geode

Many people collect heart-shaped rocks. One man gives them to his wife when he sees them; she has collected a large number over the years. Miners in the Uraguay Minerals Santa Rosa mine found a large geode and got a huge surprise. Most geodes are round or oval-shaped. When the miners finally got the 176-pound rock open, they marveled at the purple heart-shaped amethyst center.

The giant heart-shaped geode was discovered in November 2020 and has become a favorite museum display piece. The purple quartz is so perfect in shape and beauty that it requires no polish or preparation for display. The pieces were on display, as discovered, at the Minerals Museum (MIM) in Beirut, Lebanon.

Geodes are generally spherical and have crystal interiors when opened. They can be sedimentary or volcanic rocks. The shape comes from bubbles in lava or hollowed-out areas in tree roots or sedimentary rocks. The hollow areas fill with mineral-rich groundwater, which eventually (in millions of years) forms layers of minerals. Geodes can include various crystals, including calcite, quartz, amethyst, or celestite. The way geodes form is why this heart-shaped crystal growth is so unusual.

The miners stated that it had been a typical workday. They found the large basalt stone and worked to crack it open. The size and shape made that task difficult. But once the stone cracked open, they all smiled at the miracle. All agreed that the result was well worth the effort.

Lilac-colored, light purple amethyst geodes are not particularly rare. However, the deep purple hue in the heart-shaped geode makes it rare. The rich color, combined with the unusual shape, makes this a one-of-a-kind find.

Please share this beautiful discovery with friends.
