Stunning Footage Shows Octopus Changing Color While Sleeping

An octopus changing color while dreaming.

The octopus is a fantastic animal. It is identifiable because of its round body and eight arms (tentacles). Although they can survive in all oceans, they prefer warmer, tropical regions. These creatures can alter their color, much like a chameleon. An octopus may use this color-changing ability to blend in with its surroundings or communicate with another octopus.

PBS filmed an episode about raising a day octopus that aired on October 02, 2019, titled “Nature – Octopus: Making Contact.” According to the episode blurb, “The octopus is the closest we may get to meeting an alien.” For the episode, Dr. David Scheel from Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage raised a day octopus in his home.

Octopuses are extremely intelligent and have impressive problem-solving abilities. Marine biologist Dr. Scheel learned a great deal about the little critters while raising his octopus. He named the octopus Heidi and shared the responsibility of raising her with his teenage daughter, Laurel.

The little octopus formed bonds with both Scheels, showing an ability to recognize their faces. Heidi displayed excitement when interacting with the humans and seemed to enjoy playing with Laurel. While raising Heili, Dr. Scheel observed the octopus changing color, using tools to accomplish tasks, and solving puzzles.

Dr. Scheels was able to observe something rarely seen. While Heidi was sleeping, she was dreaming. Deciding to narrate what might be happening in her dream, Dr. Scheel explained as the octopus was changing color in her sleep.

The little octopus was changing her color from mottled grey-green to white to mottled yellow-green to dark. He talked about how she might be chasing a crab, a change to camouflage matching the surrounding area. It was beautiful to watch happening.
