Kids are kids and they will say some of the oddest, most unhinged things ever. Join us as we explore what 3-year-olds say in an effort to understand their world. Many children have imaginary friends. Sometimes they know they are imaginary. Or your child could be like Lainey, insisting that her parents must photograph them to document their adventures.

I’m not sure, but I might see the faint outline of Bobby Pickles in that image. In addition to playing with her friend “Bobby,” Lainey develops odd interests for a three-year-old and says things relating to her current obsession. At one point she was learning about Abraham Lincoln. Great man, but perhaps the bit about John Wilkes Booth was too much for her young brain. She immediately pointed out “the shottin’ guy” at the Lincoln Memorial. Later she worried that John Wilkes Booth was hiding under her bed.

There is no possible way for any parent to predict or constrain the things precocious 3-year-olds say. Your only hope is to pay attention, document the hilarity, and laugh about it later. For adults, that mode would be “unplugged,” but for kids, it’s the standard. For Lainey’s parents, they are becoming accustomed to their daughter’s zany quirks.

Many children go through phases. Lainey became enthralled with Hermione and Bellatrix Lestrange from the Happy Potter franchise. For her parents, that meant suffering through the movies for three months. She also obsessed over a cheer squad at a basketball game, insisting on telling each member how pretty they were. That ended with a great photo.
