Misty is an art teacher living in Idaho. She does a section on grid drawing yearly and uses a unique model. Her son, Tucker. Tucker is actually a cat. The grid drawing exercise teaches children spatial relationships. By using the grid, a student can draw a picture with near perfect proportion. The grid removes the guesswork on eye sizing, ear height, and other proportions.

As you can see, the drawings of Tucker are all very similar. Grid drawing allows an artist to create a larger or smaller version of an image. Enlarging the grid size on the drawing paper will enlarge the final image. Decreasing the grid size will decrease the final drawing. While some people think grid drawing is “cheating,” many art teachers use these drills as a teaching aid because they work.
In the video below, an artist creates an enlarged picture of Mario from the Nintendo games. The video is about five minutes, but it shows the technique in detail from beginning to end. The grid technique became popular after artist Lee Hammond wrote several drawing tutorial books. Many of the books are available new and used.
As you follow along learning the grid method, you will understand why this is such a valuable lesson for many art teachers. After the first grid drawing exercise, Misty has her students select their own subject. Many choose their pets, or people in their lives. The display of talent is great.
