Humans have been fascinated by shadows forever. We create art that conveys a message. Shadows are even used to predict the arrival of Spring each year. Parents use shadow puppets to entertain bored children in waiting rooms worldwide. When a Labrador discovered his shadow, the dog had an amusing reaction to the anomaly.

Animals use their eyes for survival. Cats and dogs will chase a laser light or a small toy on a string. In February of each year, we await the emergence of Puxatawney Phil from his groundhog home. If he sees his shadow, he scurries back inside, predicting another six weeks of Winter. If the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, the prediction is an early Spring in six weeks. The irony of Phil’s “prediction” is lost on many.
Ordinary animals have different reactions to seeing their shadows. Charlie is an attention hound. He’s been visiting with Niki Kivett Gilbert, where he recently discovered his shadow. His response is totally derpy. Derp is a term describing foolish or silly behavior, and this Labrador masterfully demonstrates the definition.

When the dog saw his shadow, it puzzled him. Trying to bite at the strange creature, he repeatedly poked his nose into the wall. We know the nature of shadows, but Charlie displays no comprehensive ability.
As his human caretaker looks on and laughs, Charlie lunges at the perceived threat of his dog shadow. With teeth bared and snarls, he attacks the threatening presence. While we take time and exercise patience when explaining shadows to a toddler, how do you explain the same thing to a dog? Chances are you don’t bother. Most would let them continue their entertainment or distract them with a treat.
