As it turns out, plants make the perfect sustainable leather – as do some of the foods we eat! One new brand has been turning thrown out fruit into beautiful bags that prove we can be stylish while also protecting the environment.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme, the fashion industry is responsible for 20 percent of global wastewater and 10 percent of global carbon emission. That’s why Heather Jiang and her business partner, Jen, set out to do things differently when they founded Allégorie. The New York-based accessories line offers quality leather products – made from apples and mangos!
Allégorie partners with suppliers in other countries who turn wasted apples and mangos from farms and grocery stores into fruit leather. Back in New York, the bags are made with plant-based and eco-friendly dyes.
Heather and Jen also visit their suppliers’ facilities in Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, and Taiwan to ensure they’re using ethical labor practices.
“This is a growing community, so we are dependent on each other and trust each other to make it work for everyone,” Heather told Marie Claire.
The result? Durable and cruelty-free purses, backpacks, and wallets, some of which even smell like the fruit they’re made of! While the brand is only a year old, it’s already making it easier for people to live green.
“Our products are like allegories that deliver a broader message about real world issues. We are a socially and environmentally responsible brand, which means it’s always more than just a bag. It’s a choice of lifestyle and belief on what’s good for the planet and future generations.”
Unlike traditional leather, this is a trend we hope never goes out of style! If you love these bags, be sure to check out all of Allégorie’s accessories here.
