Astro is a rescue dog who has been living with his new family in El Paso, Texas, for about a year now. When they first met him, they weren’t sure how long they would take him in, but after his recent act of puppy heroism, they know they can never let him go!
On April 14, one of Astro’s family members had a medical emergency with no one nearby but the loyal pup. Luckily for them, Astro put on his invisible superhero cape and jumped into action.
The brave canine immediately ran out to find a neighbor and started barking and running around relentlessly. Eventually, the neighbor realized something must be wrong, and Astro was able to lead them to his distressed owner. The Good Samaritan instantly called for emergency medical help.
“We know that the dog was even trying to climb into the ambulance with the owner, firefighters had to lure him into a vehicle for family members to come and pick him up, and without his help the patient might have never been found,” said Enrique Duenas-Aguilar, an El Paso Fire Department spokesperson.
The family was shocked and overjoyed to see their sweet pup’s courage and quick thinking.
“We never thought in a million years he’d do something like that,” Astro’s mom, Bertha Martinez, explained.
“I’ve always been scared of pit bulls, and when we brought him home I wasn’t sure we’d keep him for a long time cause he was going to grow up,” Bertha said. “[But] if you treat him well and don’t harm them or anything, then they become what he is.”
Through his act of valor, Astro is helping change the reputation of rescue animals – specifically pit bulls – everywhere.
“He really set an example for dogs that look just like him,” said Ramon Herrera, the interim director for El Paso Animal Services. “Astro is definitely a pit bull, and that is one of the main breeds you find in many shelters.”
Now that Bertha’s son is recovering and stable, their family is ready to shower Astro with all the treats and love!
In addition to their praise and gratitude, Astro received a celebration in his honor thanks to the El Paso Fire Department and El Paso Animal Services. They gave him an award and even topped it off with his very own puppy cake!
“Not only was he a friend, but he was there to help when his owner needed him the most,” Ramon said.
It’s safe to say Astro isn’t going anywhere! In fact, we imagine Bertha is telling everyone she meets that he’s the best boy of all!
