Over five million people have watched this stunning video of Derek wakeboarding through a mesmerizing trail of bioluminescence. Commenters found the footage completely breathtaking!
“This might be the coolest thing I’ve seen in my life,” wrote one user.
Another added, “I’d probably cry if I experienced this.”
Derek also chimed in to thank his friend for filming the awe-inspiring ride.
“Dude this was the best wakeboard session of my LIFE!!” he wrote. “Thanks so much for capturing this moment man.”
What is bioluminescence, and why does it look like that?
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website defines bioluminescence as “the production and emission of light by a living organism.” Fireflies are probably one of the most well-known examples of this beautiful phenomenon. However, there are a wide variety of bioluminescent creatures in the world, especially in the ocean!
Besides Derek’s magical wakeboarding experience, Josh has managed to film quite a few other amazing instances of bioluminescence. For example, there was the time he captured a group of dolphins leaping through extraordinarily illuminated waters. In another video, the photographer filmed himself walking on glowing sand during a nighttime stroll.
As Josh made his way down the beach, his feet kicked up the wet ground. Clumps of sand glowed bright blue as they splattered across the terrain, then returned to their normal color as they settled.
What an otherworldly sight! Bioluminescence is proof that magic exists if you know where to look for it.
