For the bulk of their more-than 50-year marriage, Bill and Glad Forward would go outside and ride their bikes together. It was a regular activity for them, and they even attached chairs to their bikes at one point to bring their children along for the rides.

So, when Glad’s health deteriorated as a result of Alzheimer’s, the couples’ regular bike rides looked like they might be coming to an end. But, Bill was determined not to let that happen, so he designed what he now calls The Bike Chair.

Bill said, “When we first started dating, I used to ride my bike from where I lived to where she was, and that was about 5 kilometers, on a Saturday afternoon, ‘cause that was the only chance we had to get together.” From there, the couple continued to ride together and it became a special activity for the two of them.
There was no way Bill was going to let Alzheimer’s take it away from them. He took his unique bike design to a friend who helped him execute it. The front of the bike is designed like a wheelchair where what would be the chair’s steering handles instead serve as the bike’s front wheel handles.

For Bill, doing everything he can for Glad is just part of honoring his marriage to the love of his life. He said, “I don’t count it a burden whatsoever, I count it a great privilege to care for this one I have loved all these years. She’s my princess and I’m her William and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Now, even more people can enjoy bike rides with their loved ones as The Bike Chair has gone commercial. It has a huge following as well as demand from some of the sweetest customers all over the world. Since it’s a small company, they’re doing their best to try to expand and reach everyone they can.
But, it all started with one Bike Chair that was a result of a husband whose love for his wife knew no limits.
