Earlier this month, we watched a golden retriever puppy chase butterflies, which was adorable. Now we have an elephant calf chasing his equivalent to butterflies — pigeons. This brave little guy is not taking any flap from those silly birds!

When animal toddlers aren’t playing in the water or playfully shoving one another in mock wrestling matches, they chase pigeons. This elephant calf chases one lone bird, scaring it off to protect the herd.

Following the singular success against one foe and forcing the hasty departure of the pigeon, our little warrior set off for bigger and better adventures. He spotted more of the flock and gave chase. His thunderous little flat feet pounded as he ran. The earth shook, and the birds flew to escape the melee.

The elephants at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo in Fresno, California, have been busy. Well, they were “busy” two years ago. Now they’re a different kind of busy. Several calves are wandering around the “Savanna,” and there is no end to the fun. These frisky little mischief-makers are into everything. Although they are only out from 9 AM until 3 PM daily, You can watch the calves cavort and play like Thando and Davu.

One of their favorite activities is the water hole, where Thando and Davu frequently play. Be sure to listen until the end to hear Davu trumpet his happiness!
As you watch the elephant calves play and romp, you can get lost in the joy of childhood. Elephants age at the same approximate rate as humans. Visitors can watch them grow through the years into strapping teenagers.
