Bristol Zoo Asks For Help Identifying “Mysterious Winged And Horned Creature”

Image of a muntjac deer on a Bristol Zoo trail cam gives the appearance of a mythical creature with horns and wings.

When Bristol Zoo staff examined their trail camera footage, they discovered a troubling image. At first glance, the small animal seems to be a deer. Closer examination shows what appear to be wings and a horn. Wondering what mythical creature this could be, they posted the image on Facebook to allow zoo patrons to chime in.

The responses range from explaining how trail cams work to heralding the discovery of a living Peryton. Many patrons appreciated the nature of the post and commended the staff on imagination and creative thinking. The folks at Bristol Zoo were preparing for the annual Howl-oween celebration. The appearance of this mythical creature fit right into the season!

Facebook user Alex Gannon thinks this might be a living Peryton. The Peryton is a mythical creature with the frontal body of a stag and the hindquarters and wings of a bird. Its appearance is similar to that of a Gryffyn but with a deer’s head.

Some fans likened the creature to a chupacabra, which has been described with and without wings. In the 2023 movie “Chupa” the little animal had wings. In most depictions, the Chupacabra has a more dog-like body similar to that of a young deer. We don’t think it’s a chupacabra.

We can explain the image, but imagining a mythical beast is much more fun! The trail cam image shows a young muntjac deer.

Because trail cams sometimes have little quirks, the image appears to be a double exposure of a small deer walking forward. The “wings” are a lingering impression of the ears, which is pretty boring. We still like the Peryton theory.

Please share if you think we’re right with the Peryton theory.
