British Teens’ Minds Are Blown Trying Biscuits And Gravy For The First Time

A side by side of two boys reacting to trying new food.

While many Americans find their mouths watering at the mere mention of biscuits and gravy, a group of British teenagers were quite skeptical when trying this delicacy for the first time! YouTubers Josh and Ollie, known online as JOLLY, visited a high school in England to introduce some foreign cuisine to its students. Having recently paid a visit to the American South, the two content creators were excited to share some of the most delicious foods they sampled during their trip. Obviously, biscuits and sausage gravy were at the top of the list!

In a hilarious YouTube video, Josh and Olly filmed the British high schoolers’ reactions to the savory dish. Most of these boys were quite confused when presented with a plate of hot, American biscuits. In England, “biscuits” are what we would probably refer to as cookies. Crispy and sweet, they’re meant to be dunked in a cup of tea. Many of the teenagers argued that the items on their plates were more like scones.

Although the young men regarded these baked goods with suspicion, they changed their minds after tasting them! However, it was right back to square one when it was time to pour the sausage gravy on top. Not only were they dubious about the flavor combination, but they were also pretty disgusted by the gravy’s lumpy appearance. In fact, quite a few of the boys claimed that it looked like vomit. One outlier even suggested that the dish resembled “a chopped up ferret.”

Despite their inital reactions, though, the high schoolers were eventually persuaded into trying the American biscuits and gravy. You could tell by the looks on some of their faces that life would never be the same!

Some of these teens really, really liked American biscuits and gravy.

“Wow, that is good!” said one boy through a mouthful, his eyes lighting up with delight.

Of course, this rich dish isn’t for everyone. Some of the teenagers weren’t convinced even after tasting the biscuits and gravy. Others conceded that the experience wasn’t completely disgusting, but they still didn’t enjoy it very much.

Thankfully, Josh and Ollie had a few more Southern treats up their sleeves. First, they brought out some crispy fried chicken. This went over way better than the gravy! Next, the high schoolers were treated to some sweet iced tea.

“Why is it cold if it’s tea?” one boy asked, only familiar with the hot version of this beverage.

Once again, although some of the teens were reluctant, most ended up really liking sweet iced tea. In fact, one of the high schoolers made the bold claim that it was better iced than hot.

Although not everyone loved trying biscuits and gravy, it still seems like this experiment was pretty successful!
