In the wake of Gene Hackman and Betsey Arakawa’s deaths, Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma Hemming, is speaking out. She wants the world to understand that caregivers take on heavy emotional loads and need to be seen. Following her husband Bruce Willis’ aphasia diagnosis, Emma has taken on much of his care. The model shared on Instagram that she wouldn’t “normally comment on” someone’s “tragic passing,” but she had to speak up.

“I do really believe that there is some learning in this story,” she said. “It’s just made me think of this broader story, and that is that caregivers need care too and that they are vital. It is so important that we show up for them so that they can continue to show up for their person.”
Emma thinks there is a common misconception that caregivers have it all figured out, but in reality, they need care, too.
“[People think] they’ve got it covered. They’re good. I don’t subscribe to that. I think that we need to be showing up for them so that they can continue to show up for their person,” she said.

This person agreed, “My wife is 55 and has Early-Onset Alzheimer’s. I am home full-time with her. Thank you for the work you do. And amen to your statement!”
Another caregiver shared their own experience with Emma Hemming on Instagram, writing, “We get sooo wore down emotionally and physically.”
