Have you ever seen a screech owl using their incredible camouflage skills to blend in with the background? If you have, it probably took a lot of effort to spot them! A wildlife lover on social media shared an incredible video from the Canadian Raptor Conservancy. She caught the most unbelievable footage of one of these owls completely disappearing into the scenery as a result of their feather pattern!

At the beginning of this clip, the woman filmed what looked like a jagged tree stump. However, as she zoomed in on the sight, it became clear that there was a screech owl sneakily perched near the top. This bird’s feathers looked so identical to the tree’s bark, they rendered the animal almost invisible. We had to do a double-take when we saw a face peering out from the trunk!
Although the screech owl’s feathers played a huge role in helping this creature hide in plain sight, we also have to give the bird some credit for standing eerily still the entire time. In fact, the animal pretty much only moved to blink!
If you spent the first half of this video wondering what on earth you were looking at besides a tree trunk, you’re not alone. Tons of people in the comments section had the exact same experience!

“I was like yep, cool dead tree!” wrote one user.
Another added, “Took me forever to see it. Camouflage is good.”
A third said, “I didn’t see it, until it blinked.”
Now that you know what a camouflaged screech owl looks like, why not try your hand at spotting some other hard-to-see avians? Birds and Blooms shared some incredible tips to help enthusiasts find a variety of hidden birds in the wild.
