Emily and Brittany met in college ten years ago and remained friends after graduation. Emily describes Brittany as “the BIGGEST nerd and a massive Lord of the Rings fan.” Brittany loved the books and the movies. She even used LotR quotes and drawings to enhance their college dormitory space. It had always been Brittany’s dream to visit Middle Earth. Sadly, on March 13, 2021, the Lord of the Rings fan lost her battle with Ovarian cancer before she could take that journey.

Emily wanted a better ending for her friend. She began planning a trip to Middle Earth. The filming locations are in New Zealand. Although she couldn’t physically take her friend, Emily could take a picture and all of her memories with Brittany. With an 8-inch by 11-inch color photo of Brittany, Emily set out to fulfill her friend’s dreams. She began her trip at Bag End, the underground home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins — a fitting place to start an epic adventure.
Next on the itinerary was a quick stop at the Green Dragon Inn. A quick round of ale and a toast to friendship. After replenishment, Emily set out toward Mount Doom. The fictional volcano in Mordor, where the One Ring was forged, was also the only place it could be destroyed.
Stopping to rest at the hobbit’s hideaway was an important visit. The site was used in the movies as a way station or safe area for weary travelers. Moving along, it was imperative to scale the Mountains of Gondor. Peregrin “Pippin” Took remained in Gondor, where he became a Knight of Gondor.
A Lord Of The Rings Send-Off To End Brittany’s Cancer Journey
Leaving Gondor, Emily set out to show Brittany Pelenor Fields, where the greatest battle of all time occurred.
In her final goodbye, Emily Drew a heart in the snow and added a heartfelt message for Brittany. Losing a close friend is never easy, but Emily found a great way to honor her. You can view the entire slideshow on Emily’s TikTok channel, She’s a Trip blog.
