The term “icon” is used a lot, but there truly is no better word to describe Dolly Parton. She’s proven to be a talented singer and actor, of course. The folks in Tennessee haven’t failed to notice the impact she continues to have both locally and nation-wide. To show their appreciation for Parton, a petition was made to rename the Nashville International Airport to Dolly Parton International Airport. While this may sound like just a fun idea, actions are being taken to make this dream a reality. In fact, the petition already has 2,827 signatures (at the time this article is being written).
“She is not only a celebrated artist who encourages love, acceptance, and goodwill through her music, but also a philanthropist, known for her countless contributions to society,” the official petition reads. “It is only fitting that an institution as significant as Nashville International Airport carries the name of such a remarkable woman.”

To back up their point, the petition references Parton’s Imagination Library program. Since 1995, this entirely free program has gotten over 267 million books into the hands of children. One way they do this is by mailing books to children who are five and under, every single month. How cool is that?
This comes after a bill proposed the renaming of the airport to “Trump International Airport.” So far, government officials who have the power to make this name change have yet to respond to the petition. But at this rate, the number of signatures is going to make it difficult to ignore. The petitioners do make some very compelling arguments, after all!
“Dolly’s philanthropic efforts, her outstanding influence in the music industry, and the love she has instilled in our hearts through her actions and songs, truly make her a deserving candidate … ” the petition reads. “We request that the airport’s name be changed to Dolly Parton International Airport to honor an icon who has given so much to our state and to the world … We could all be Departin’ from Parton!!”
