Football season has officially begun! With the start of each season, football players can expect to take new team headshots. While it’s true that everyone wants to look their best, most teams don’t share the same vision for their photos as those at the Colorado School of Mines. Why? Because these Colorado football players refuse to give up a longtime tradition involving these yearly headshots.

Tim Flynn, the assistant athletic director for communications at the college, is more than happy to share details on this fun tradition. It’s believe to have started in 2016 or 2017. At first, it was pretty simple. Rather than putting on a simple smile or a stoic look, the footballers would make all sorts of funny faces.
But this quickly transformed into brightly dyed hair and odd beard trims — anything to make their photos stand out in a humorous way. So, although it’s been about eight years since the tradition began, this year’s roster is proof that it won’t be stopping anytime soon.
As usual, these silly guys went all out to showcase their personalities, something a few of them did with the clever use of blue hair dye. You can check out some from last year (as seen above) as well as those from this year (as seen below).
Colorado Football Players Showcase Their Silly Sides Through These Clever Headshots
Any sports fan can tell you that every team has their own traditions. There are those rooted in something meaningful or emotional, of course. But it’s also valuable to have those that exist simply because they bring the players and their fans joy.
Speaking of which, Tim says that there doesn’t seem to be any solid reason behind the start of this tradition, noting that it was “Just the guys having fun with it.” We love it! For a full view of this year’s headshots, check out the college’s website.
