Nobody enjoys being cooped indoors for long stretches of time, waiting for the snow to melt and ice to thaw. Fortunately, anyone who’s house-bound for days or weeks on end can binge watch their favorite shows, poke around online and find other ways to alleviate the boredom. Cows, however, just have to suck it up and deal with it.

The Friesian cows in the clip below were cooped inside a barn in Holland for six long months, probably itching the whole time to get outside and breathe in the fresh air. Dutch broadcaster Omrop Fryslân filmed the joyous occasion when they were finally let out to graze.
This annual event, Koeien in de wei (cows in the pasture), is something of a spectator sport. The moment is so incredible that a huge crowd of spectators wait each year in anticipation to see the cows jumping, frolicking, and bellows of joy.

According to Anne Marie de Passille and Jeffrey Rushen, Canadian researchers who study cow behavior, cows love changes in scenery. They jump and their steps are more pronounced “whenever something new or unexpected happens … We think it’s a sign that things are well with them.â€

Imagine how it must feel, spending half the year crammed into a dark, musty barn, then walking through that big doorway into the bright, life-affirming sunshine and lush, green grass. If that’s not heaven for a cow, we’re not sure what else qualifies!
