It has long been known that deaf people and animals can sense sound through vibrations. For humans, a deaf concert vest coupled with American Sign Language interpretations of the words permits deaf patrons to “hear” concerts. For artist Katja Muller, it means her deaf cat can “hear” the music when lying on the piano.

Katja was born in Mexico City, México, and now lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Her white cat, Guapo, is deaf. When he lies on the piano while she is playing, it is evident that he “feels” the sounds and is content. It is common for white cats to be born deaf, but we are unsure if Guapo has always been deaf or has suffered hearing loss throughout his life.
Guapo doesn’t seem to mind being a deaf cat and is content to hang out on the piano as Mom plays. Watching the changing expressions on his face, you can see the apparent enjoyment he feels through the vibrations. Katja plays softly, and Guapo snuggles into the sounds.
Guapo repays Katja for regaling him with music by inspiring her art with creative cat poses. In one pose, he looks like an incorrectly assembled IKEA cat, which inspires abstract thoughts. He is a beautiful cat that genuinely appreciates musical vibrations. Another cat appears on Katja’s TikTok as a master purring machine. She claims the ginger tabby purrs like a Harley-Davidson. In the brief video, he is very audible and content with life.

Please share Guapo’s love for piano music.
