Vanessa Keating and her dog, Bryce, are cross-country hikers. They train for longer daily distances and are training for a 2,000-mile hike. On a 14-mile training day, Bryce did what dogs do — he picked up a stick. This was no ordinary stick, though. This was a super-deluxe hiking stick, and this dog was not letting go of it!

It wasn’t a good dog hiking stick. It was more like a fireplace log. A person hiking in the opposite direction commented about having firewood when they got home. Other comments included that Bryce had found treasure, a big stick, and the perfect log.
Bryce proudly carried his big stick, holding his head high so everyone could see his prize. Someone stated they had a Labrador that would carry a stick for miles, and Vanessa commented that it had been four miles so far. A passing biker asked, “The bigger the better? Vanessa responded that Bryce would grab a whole tree if he could.
They passed the five-mile mark, and the dog still had a good grip on his hiking stick. Enjoying Bryce’s obsession, Vanessa warned some hikers they were passing, “You’ve got a logging truck behind you.” There were a few brief periods when Bryce set the log down. If Vanessa tried to reach for it, he grabbed it again and resumed their hike.
Vanessa and Bryce hit the seven-mile mark. The dog still had a firm grip on his hiking stick! Vanessa conversed with a biker. She said she usually doesn’t let him bring sticks in the house, but she might make an exception (she did). The dog carried the heavy hiking stick for 14 miles. It is his favorite stick ever!
