“Disney’s Clever Way Of Checking For Lice”

Image shows a Disney hairstylist discretely checking a child for lice before styling their hair.

Traveling to the Magic Kingdom at a Disney property offers children a magical transformation into a prince or a princess. At the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, stylists will transform children into royalty. Because of the number of people it serves, Disney has to be careful about parasites, which means checking for lice before each patron sits for transformation.

Disney personnel have special training to check for lice without arousing concerns or scaring children. As you can see in the video, the stylist runs their fingers through the hair. They separate and arrange the hair in several ways to check the roots. As they prepare the child for their royal transformation, they “experiment” with various ideas while thoroughly checking the hair.

Because many people stay in hotels during Disney trips, checking for lice is essential. Head lice live on the scalp, so the stylists check for that. Additionally, they check for eggs (nits) that cling to hair shafts near the scalp.

The relaxed method of checking allows the stylist to ensure each child is parasite-free. Children relax as the stylist “plays” with their hair during the check. While parents may understand what is happening, children have no clue. Disney understands that having lice can traumatize a child (and the parents). No public records show how many patrons are turned away due to infestations.

The main goal of Disney’s incognito way of checking for lice is to keep their young patrons safe. Employees ensure that the salon remains parasite-free by performing this short check before styling. Any parent who has been through lice checks at a child’s school truly appreciates Disney’s approach to this potentially scary situation. It is non-intrusive, gentle, and non-traumatizing for the child.
