When Taci Humphries was a child, her new home was hit by a tornado. Because everyone in her family survived, and she was still young, Taci says she was “kind of naive” and “didn’t know what to expect” when it came to recovering after such a devastating storm. The same could not be said of the second tornado that hit that very same home just this year, a whole 18 years after the first one.

During both storms, the family was hit by an EF-4 tornado. But once again, everyone in Taci’s family managed to stay safe. But when the winds died down this time, their home wasn’t their top concern. This time, all of their focus went on finding and rescuing their beloved animals, including their horses. Six of them were trapped in their barn. One of them, Blondie, was found under a 1,000-pound trough.

Thankfully, Taci and her family were not alone in their rescue mission. Family, friends, and total strangers came to their rescue. So, despite the immense weight of the trough, Blondie was quickly freed. She did sustain injuries but, miraculously, she survived. The same is true for the other six horses, too.

While this second tornado seems to have caused more damage than the first, the family was more prepared this time. Now, they’re starting to rebuild once more. Though, this time, they may be moving to a different location. In any case, this family is oh-so grateful for everyone’s continued support.
“Both times we’ve been overwhelmed by how wonderful [the] family [and] friends that we have [are],” Mandy Humphries, Taci’s mom, says. “We are blessed to have a wonderful community and people that love us and help take care of us.”
