Drummer Covering Red Hot Chili Peppers Has No Clue Who’s Watching Him Play

A street musician playing the drums in public.

When this talented drummer covered a Red Hot Chili Peppers song on the street, he only had one audience member. However, that person’s rapt attention was worth more than a thousand passersby! It’s too bad that the busker didn’t seem to notice who was watching. If he had, it probably would have been one of the best moments of his life!

In a jaw-dropping clip on social media, the street musician was drumming along to a recording of Otherside by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Sitting across from him was an older man, smiling as he nodded his head and tapped his feet to the music. It was Chad Smith — the actual drummer from the Red Hot Chili Peppers! Over 11 million people have watched this video online.

“Imagine shooting hoops in front of Michael Jordan and not even realizing it,” read the post’s caption.

In all fairness, it’s pretty understandable that the busker either didn’t see or recognize the famous musician in front of him. He was probably way more focused on his drum set than on the crowd! Plus, even if he did have time to glance up, he still might not have been willing to believe that the man sitting in front of him was actually Chad Smith. After all, we don’t usually expect to see celebrities in public, and we definitely don’t expect to see them staring at us.

It’s also possible that this street musician did notice who was watching.

Some commenters had a different theory. They suggested that the busker did actually see Chad Smith in the background, but he didn’t react because he needed to focus on the music. After all, he’d want to impress the Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer, right?

“Who says he didn’t realize?” wrote one user. “He was probably sitting there the whole time going ‘Omg, omg, don’t mess up, don’t mess up.'”

Another added, “Why are we assuming he doesn’t know him? He’s literally performing. Is he supposed to just stop? That would defeat the whole purpose of being a street performer.”

Whether or not this busker realized that his only audience member was the actual drummer from the band he was covering, it was still a pretty special moment. One commenter had the best takeaway.

“The fact that Chad Smith is just sitting there vibing is just about the biggest compliment you could ask for, bro,” they said. “Good job.”
