Arkansas Mom Sara Lamb, was baffled and concerned when she noticed a change in the texture of her baby’s hair.

It is normal for a child’s soft “baby hair” to fall out as new hair grows in, and it’s nothing to worry about if that new hair feels a little different, but Sara knew something was off when daughter– Jaili– started growing hair that was wiry and coarse.

At first, Sara and her husband thought Jaili would have tight curls, but her hair stayed stick-straight. Not only that, it grew in bright white.

Sara tried at least 20 different hair products and spent hundreds of dollars on her quest to solve the mystery of Jaili’s hair. When nothing worked, Sara grew concerned, worrying she’d done something to cause the texture and color.
That’s when she heard about “uncombable hair syndrome,” a rare gene disorder. She, along with Jaili– now 2 years old– and Dad, sent off DNA samples to the Institute for Human Genetics at the University of Bonn.

Sara soon found out she carries one of only three genes known to cause the condition. Uncombable hair syndrome tends to spontaneously regress in late childhood.

While this condition is extremely rare, there’s one other person you’ll probably recognize who is rumored to have had uncombable hair syndrome: Albert Einstein!

Now that the mystery is solved, Sara is happy to embrace her daughter’s adorable hair, which she now says “looks like a dandelion!”

“She has a quirky personality,” says Sara, “and her hair is an extension of that.”
