When Jane discovers a hidden treasure at the bottom of a river, it takes quite a bit of effort to get it. That’s part of the reason this time capsule had yet to be discovered, after all! But this item was so buried, it was hard to make out what it even was at first. All Jane knew was that it stood out from the rest of the riverbed. Luckily, it didn’t take too long to discover that this seemingly random item was more than worth her time. Find out what Jane found in the video below!

@myordinarytreasure 120+ years old! 👇…Visit my Insta – @myordinarytreasure for the details and updates on my river finds. *** Bottle of pickles 'fresh' from the river! Well, you've got to love a time capsule, but I certainly wouldn't have expected it to be in the form of a 120 odd year old jar of pickles, discovered completely intact, still corked and with embossed topper, found in a river last weekend. The company name is W & D Harvest of Dowgate Dock, Upper Thames Street, London and although I can't find the exact trading dates, I have found record of William Harvest at this address listed as a Spice Dealer and Salterer in the 1870s and then listed as W & D, still trading in 1910. The bottle itself is aqua glass with applied lip, it's certainly not a bottle type I would ever have associated with pickles, and now I understand why those exceptionally long pickle forks were so popular back in the day. Other finds in this little spot would point to a date of around 1890-1910! Now I am going to seal the top with wax…and never ever be tempted to open it!  *** #timecapsule #riverfinds #mudlarking #treasurehunting #happyplace ♬ Documentary Music – Dian Fadli

Would you have ever guessed that a preserved jar of pickles would be at the bottom of a river? The mere fact that they were there is amazing enough. But the truly shocking part is just how fresh they still look! Though, it’s certainly not recommended to give them a taste…

“Well, you’ve got to love a time capsule,” Jane writes in her post, “but I certainly wouldn’t have expected it to be in the form of a 120 odd year old jar of pickles, discovered completely intact, still corked and with embossed topper, found in a river last weekend.”

Woman Discovers a Hidden Capsule at the Bottom of a River… and it Contains Pickles

Wanting to know more about this jar of pickles, Jane did a bit of research. The company name W & D Harvest Dowgate Dock was on the top of the seal, so she had a good place to start. It seems to have been located at Upper Thames Street in London. From here, she was able to find an important name: William Harvest.

For a while, he was listed as a Spice Dealer and Salterer in the 1870s. But that changed in 1910 when he was listed with… W & D! This is one of the reasons that Jane believes these pickles are at least 120 years old. How incredible is that!?

“The bottle itself is aqua glass with applied lip, it’s certainly not a bottle type I would ever have associated with pickles, and now I understand why those exceptionally long pickle forks were so popular back in the day,” Jane continues. “Other finds in this little spot would point to a date of around 1890-1910! Now I am going to seal the top with wax…and never ever be tempted to open it!”
