In January, Los Angeles experienced some of the most deadly fires in its history. It took weeks to contain them all, and many people lost their homes and lives. Sophie Zaloom, a woman from the Palisades area, is grateful that none of her loved ones were harmed. That said, the same can’t be said of her family’s home. In fact, by the time they returned home, the entire building had burned to the ground.

Perhaps some of Sophie’s belongings were salvageable. But based on images she shared of the aftermath on social media, not much was able to withstand the flames. This can be seen in the heartbreaking image below.

The Palisades fire took nearly everything from this family, and yet, they were able to spot a reminder of hope amidst the rubble. While much of the area had been destroyed, some life remains in the daffodils that line the home’s walkway.
Around two months ago, Mom planted 150 daffodils. After the fire, a number of them remain standing. In fact, they even look healthy!

“The daffodils prevailed, and we will too,” Sophie writes in her social media post, adding in the caption, “Nature’s way of reminding us… there’s hope.”

Needless to say, it’s going to take time and effort in order to recover from this tragedy. But seeing these bright, beautiful daffodils thriving, despite everything, is giving Sophie’s family the strength they need to carry on. Plus, it’s inspiring others as well.
“Daffodils are the symbol for rebirth and hope,” someone points out in reply to Sophie’s moving story, with another sharing a fitting quote, “They tried to burn us, bury us… little did they know we were seeds.”
