Nearly two months after police found Michelle Trachtenberg dead inside a New York City apartment, we know the official cause of death. Michelle died at 39 years old from complications of diabetes mellitus, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner shared with People. It is unclear if Michelle had type 1 or type 2 diabetes or how long she lived with the disease. According to People, Michelle’s family initially objected to an autopsy, and the medical examiner listed the cause of death as “undetermined.” It’s not clear what changed the family’s mind.

Michelle Trachtenberg’s Cause Of Death Was Due To A Private Health Issue
A source told people the Gossip Girl star recently underwent a liver transplant and may have experienced complications. A second source said she was “really, really down emotionally” and “told friends she was struggling.” The insider added, “She was really, really sick and open with those in her circle about how much she was struggling. She was “pale, gaunt, very thin, and dealing with health issues.”
A week before her death, Michelle shared a photo of happier days on Instagram with the caption, “I wanted to look like naughty #Tinkerbell.”
A fan shared, “still not over this! Dearest Michelle, i hope your at rest, i hope you will be rooting from above for the New Buffy series. It’s not going to be the same without you but I know they will honour your name and memory in the show. Forever our little sister Dawn.”

In January 2024, Michelle Trachtenberg shared a selfie looking different, but smiling. She captioned the photo, “Fun fact. This is my face. Not malnutrition no problems. Why do you have you hate? Get a calendar.”
