Man’s Best Friend: Farm Dog Finds Missing Toddler, Leads Him Back To Safety

Image shows Anatolian Pyrenees Buford, the dog who found a missing toddler in Arizona.

Farm animals might bring anything home for their pawrents. Stray deer fawns, raccoons, and other animals will follow the family dog home in search of a free meal. Dogs are in the habit of making friends. It’s what they do. When Scotty Dunton headed into town on Tuesday morning, April 15, he did not expect to see his Anatolian Pyrenees on the roadside with a new friend. Dunton realized his dog had found the missing toddler, Boden Allen, and immediately notified authorities.

Buford’s job on the Dunton farm involves strolling the perimeter nightly to keep coyotes and other predators out. During his patrol, the dog found the missing toddler and led him out of the Arizona wilderness. The boy was reported missing on Monday evening. Searchers had been out all night.

Dunton’s Kingman, Arizona, farm is approximately seven miles from the boy’s home in Seligman, AZ, covering some challenging terrain. After finding the boy, Dunton calmed him, fed him, and managed to get part of the story from the frightened child. The boy walked until he settled down beside a tree where Buford found him. No one is sure how the dog found the missing toddler, but they’re happy he did.

Buford isn’t sure what to make of his newfound fame, but he is basking in the glory of it. He was rewarded with a two-pound ribeye dinner after finding the missing toddler. Dunton says that gifts have been arriving on his doorstep regularly since the rescue, telling KPNX of Phoenix, “Toys, chew toys, snacks, you name it, just a little bit of everything.” The Yavapai County Search and Rescue Team made Buford an honorary member and presented him with a team vest.
