Becoming a parent brings many joys and surprising fun facts about kids. While there are many moments of “wow, I didn’t know that until I became a parent,” none compare to this father’s shock when he learns a surprising fact about his son’s kneecaps. Listen as he goes on a hysterical rant to his wife, and enjoy his disbelief as he learns that his son does not yet have kneecaps.
While this may be shocking to hear, it is, in fact, a true statement. When children are young, their skeletons possess more cartilage than adult skeletons. Their “kneecaps” are not like yours or mine. Instead, they’re made of cartilage, like your ears. They’re more durable because of the beginning stages of their lives with crawling, learning to walk, and lots of tumbles, there is a lot of emphasis on their knees.
According to the Rady Children’s Hospital, “most children’s kneecaps begin to ossify – turn from cartilage to bone – between the ages of two and six.” While this may be common knowledge to doctors, it certainly was not common knowledge to Dylan. Viewers can see his shock at the beginning of the video when he addresses his wife, wide-eyed, and booms, “Shelby!”
Father Makes Hilarious Jokes While He Rants About Children Not Having Kneecaps
While Dylan was in shock, it didn’t mask his incredible sense of humor. Dylan continues to tease his son about his lack of kneecaps, saying things like, “He ain’t got a kneecap to stand on.” He also says, “Whenever I coach his Little League team, does that mean it’d be disrespectful if I ask the children to take a knee?”
It is clear by his wife Shelby’s laughter that she was just as entertained by his reaction as the rest of us. At one point, Dylan asks his wife, “How am I 20-something years old, and I’m just now figuring out that children below six don’t have kneecaps?”
