According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, bartering is “to trade by exchanging one commodity for another: to trade goods or services in exchange for other goods or services.” The practice of bartering has been in use since around 6,000 B.C. It is still used today as people trade goods for services or other goods. When Sirius, a golden retriever, wants the food on his mom’s plate, he tries to barter with her.

Begging for food is “off limits” for the golden retriever. By trying to barter with his mom, he thinks he is avoiding the inevitable “No” he will receive if he begs. The entire episode is adorable. The dog knows that his mom likes blankets, so he starts by stealing the blanket she already has and offering it.
The golden retriever really wants that food. He is thoughtful in his barter offerings. When the blanket doesn’t work, he tries the remote. Both things Mom uses and needs, at least in his limited view. He takes a step back and contemplates his next offering before running off to search. Coming back with not just one, but two leashes.

Still not budging, Sirius tries to entice his mom with a stuffed dinosaur and a grandma doll. Still thinking, he runs off again and returns with his mom’s nausea medicine. This golden retriever wants her food and willing to pull out all the stops.
After all that, he finally gets a tiny morsel for his efforts. She doesn’t encourage begging, but his mom admits that the bartering system is just too cute to resist. The random pile of offered items shows that he put some thought into good trade items.
