There are some Thanksgiving traditions we simply can’t live without — Jamal and Wanda spending the holiday together is one of them. If you aren’t aware (or need a reminder), these two strangers became fast family in 2016 after a texting mishap. At that time, Wanda intended to text her grandson, which included a photo of herself. Instead, she texted a stranger. This person was Jamal.

Of all the people for Wanda to accidentally text, Jamal was the perfect one. He was quite delighted by this text from a stranger. He let her know that he wasn’t her grandson, and he jokingly asked if he was still invited for Thanksgiving. Much to his surprise, Wanda said “yes,” noting that, “That’s what grandma’s do… feed every one.”
Jamal and Wanda Have Spent Every Thanksgiving Together Since 2016
And so Jamal and Wanda’s yearly Thanksgiving tradition began. Every year since 2016, the two of them have spent the holiday together — along with other friends and family, of course! This includes Jamal’s significant other, Mikaela. Over the years, this unexpected family has made sure to share a photo or two on social media, and folks continue to love it!
Since 2016, the two have gone through so much in life, both good and bad. In 2020, Wanda’s husband passed away from COVID. Now, Wanda is sharing that she was diagnosed with breast cancer just this year. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy. While this has been a scary time, she’s happy to report she’s feeling hopeful and supported.
“I’ve learned a lot of life’s lessons through it all, but what I want to stress most of all is just because you may be older, we still have a life to live,” Wanda shares. “… So continue getting your checkups, and continue to live YOUR life!”
Fans of this unexpected duo are so happy to see that Wanda is in good spirits. They’re also thrilled to hear that this will be the ninth year in a row that she’ll be spending Thanksgiving with Jamal!
“Excited to announce that I’m hosting Thanksgiving this year for Wanda and I!” Jamal shared in a social media post. “Looking forward to a day filled with good food, great company, and lasting memories. Year 9 coming soon!”
