When a mother and her young daughter visited grandma, they got a pleasant surprise. The grandma suffers from Alzheimer’s, and they weren’t sure what would happen. She has been non-verbal, meaning that the disease has stolen her ability to speak.

The grandma was sleeping peacefully in a chair. While mom Erin Sousa was trying to talk her daughter into waking grandma up, she woke on her own. After looking around, Grandma saw her visitors, and her face lit up with recognition.

The first hurdle of visiting grandma with Alzheimer’s was easy. Even after a year, she recognized her daughter and granddaughter. After the huge smile, the granddaughter ran to open arms. Both were cautious but overjoyed and leaned in for hugs. Grandma could only make happy noises, but that and the huge smile on her face were enough.
