We’ve all heard the stereotype that pits canines against the mailman. But in reality, many dogs wait by the door every day to greet their letter-carrying friends.

One Texas mailman, Fernando, always looked forward to visiting a German shepherd named Gretchen on his route. She would look for him every day and he would often bring her treats.

But when he delivered the mail to Gretchen’s house on April 1, he found a note addressed to him. It had been places alongside a bag of biscuits. It was from Gretchen’s owners. Fernando told his daughter what happened and she posted a screenshot of the text on Twitter.
“Gretchen passed away yesterday,” the note reads. “She asked me to ask you if you would share her treats that she never got to finish with the other dogs on your route. She always enjoyed seeing you come to the door and was always happy to get a snack from you. Thank you, The Cimino Family.”

The bittersweet story struck a chord with everyone who saw it, many of whom are dog parents themselves.

Thousands lamented the death of a dog they’d never met. Some shared photos of their own beloved pets to brighten the mood. The post soon went viral and was so widespread it ended up catching the attention of Gretchen’s dad himself. He was moved, to say the least, by all the messages of love and support and shared an adorable video of his sweet girl waiting for Fernando.
My wife and I were told about Gretchen’s letter to Fernando being on Twitter. I can’t begin to tell y’all how much it has meant to us seeing how much love and support y’all have shown our girl. She was the absolute best. This is a short video of her seeing her mailman. pic.twitter.com/uK9Y2BtKtO

Rest in peace, Gretchen. Your memory will live on in Fernando’s acts of kindness for other dogs, and, of course, in your family’s hearts.
