Dr. Jennifer LaFemina is sure to attend her son’s Little League games whenever she can. She does so to support her kid, of course, but she was more focused on a different child during a recent semi-finals game. The reason why goes back to her career in the medical field. During the game, one of her kid’s teammates, Korey Pontbriand, became injured. A mishap led him to accidentally being struck by a baseball in the throat. Although he insisted he was fine, this heroic mom would go on to save the young umpire’s life.

But how did this surgical oncologist do it? Her lifesaving efforts began soon after the accident took place. Although Korey continued to play, she took note of some concerning symptoms he was showing. After a while, she was able to convince the kid to leave the field. It was in this moment that Korey collapsed.
In an instant, folks took action to save the little boy’s life. For Jennifer, that included administering CPR on Korey who, at that time, was no longer breathing. Luckily, Jennifer had help in the form of her medical assistant, Emily Lutfy. Although she doesn’t have children in Little League anymore, she loves to attend games with Jennifer in order to support her son.
Mom Heroically Saves the Umpire at Her Kid’s Little League Game
By the time a defibrillator was brought back to Korey, both Jennifer and Emily were already able to get him breathing again. From there, this sweet kid was sent to the hospital. Here, he underwent “emergency surgery and extensive testing.” Thankfully, he has since become stable and is breathing on his own.
Both Jennifer and Emily were honored during a town meeting with the Oxford Board of Selectmen. Here, both of them gave emotional speeches, which you can watch in the video above.
“If not for Jennifer’s acute awareness and heroic efforts, this story may have had a different ending,” the Algonquin Baseball and Softball shares in a post. “Those close to the situation report that Jennifer saved Korey’s life. They refer to her as ‘Korey’s guardian angel.'”
The InspireMore team wishes Korey a full and speedy recovery!
