Have you ever heard of the Lakeland Festival of Light? This magical event is organized by Lakeland Mountain Guides, a company that puts together outdoor activities for travelers in the United Kingdom’s Lake District. However, this festival is a little different than some of their other offerings. Their website describes the event as “mountain art,” and for good reason! In order to understand it, though, you really need to see this spectacular occasion for yourself.

During the Lakeland Festival of Light, thousands of people head to a specific mountain region for an unforgettable evening. Once the sky darkens, everyone turns on a lantern or other light source in order to create a breathtaking trail of illumination. The results are truly mesmerizing!
One of the most important things about this event, though, is that it’s all for charity. According to Lakeland Mountain Guides, the tradition began back in 2015, when the organization hosted a get-together to benefit the Lake District Search & Mountain Rescue Association. Shortly thereafter, they coordinated another similar fundraiser to help the victims of a devastating earthquake in Nepal.
Although only a handful of people attended the prototype event that would eventually become the Lakeland Festival of Light, this year’s count was truly inspiring! In 2024, thousands headed to the Catbells in order to participate.
One woman on social media actually got to witness the Lakeland Festival of Light from her bedroom, and her view was pretty special! She shared the coolest footage of the Catbells lighting up in the distance. What an incredible moment!
This year, the Lakeland Festival of Light raised money for the Michelle Jurd Trust. This organization is all about providing outdoor adventures and experiences to young people and veterans, Lakeland Mountain Guides tells us. Each person attending the event was expected to donate at least £10. Isn’t this a creative way to raise money for a worthy cause?
