We lost Dame Maggie Smith on September 27, 2024. She passed away at age 89 after an illustrious acting career that spanned 71 years. Of course, those who grew up watching the Harry Potter films will remember her best for her portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall, head of Gryffindor House.
Wands were raised high in the late Maggie Smith’s honor.
Besides appreciating the beautiful light show outside Hogwarts Castle, many fans also chose to participate in another long-standing tradition. According to WDW News Today, it has become customary for Harry Potter lovers to raise their wands outside Hogwarts Castle in honor of deceased cast members. Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), and Alan Rickman (Severus Snape) were all commemorated in this way. Obviously, the late Professor McGonagall received the same heartfelt tribute.
