An abandoned dog named Hope is living up to her name as she gets a second chance at life with a new family. Earlier this month, Hope wandered out of the woods alone in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. Then, she lay down in the middle of the road. At first, onlookers thought that she was dead. However, on further inspection, they realized that she was just exhausted and extremely malnourished.

According to her online fundraiser, Help for Hope, the dog was too weak to even drink water. Area resident Rachel took the dog to Cascade Animal Hospital, promising to adopt her if she recovered. After various tests and treatments, vets discovered that Hope had a skin infection and rocks in her stomach (likely having eaten them out of desperation.) They also learned that she was about seven years old.
Community members financed Hope’s care through Help for Hope on GoFundMe. Although they set a goal of $10,000, they raised more than twice that! The Hope for Hope Facebook page is also posting updates. On Thursday, they announced that the pooch was finally healthy enough to move into her new home.
“When we found Hope we weren’t sure that this outcome would be a reality,” reads the post. “Honestly, things looked grim but we wanted to give this girl a fighting chance, and fight she did. And while she still has a ways to go to get back to optimal health, today she was all tail wags and love for her humans (she is the sweetest girl).”
According to WZZM, police are investigating Hope’s case, suspecting animal cruelty. Vets suspect that the dog was used for breeding and then abandoned.
In Hope for Hope’s most recent update, it looks like the good girl is adjusting beautifully to her new living situation.
“She had a perfect first night and day at home, sleeping peacefully all night in her bed (with the cutest little snores) politely notifying her humans when she needed to get up for a potty break,” the post states. “She’s slowly getting introduced to the other fur babies, with only one other pup at home with her now.”
