“I Started An ‘I Wish My Teacher Knew Mailbox’ And Here’s How It Went”

A mailbox and a vase of flowers are sat on a countertop. Text on the image reads: I started an "I wish my Teacher Knew mailbox" and here's how it went

Once you’re an adult, it can be easy to forget the difficulties of being a kid. School can be especially tough for little ones, especially if there’s bullying involved. Thankfully, there are lots of amazing teachers out there who are dedicated to doing whatever they can to help. Miss T is one of those teachers. At the start of the new school year, she wanted to find a way to help her 4th graders communicate with her in a way that was comfortable for them.

That’s because, at the end of the day, it can be hard to voice your feelings or concerns. This is true no matter how vocal a teacher is about their care for students. And so Miss T’s “I wish my teacher knew mailbox” was born. With this mailbox, students are able to share things they might not have otherwise… and it’s already helping in such amazing ways.

A mailbox and a vase of flowers are sat on a countertop. A hand reaches out and has opened the mailbox. Text on the image reads:

I check it every day at 9:45 during my prep and at the end of the day. Students can tell me something good, something bad, a check in, a request, really anything they want to tell me!

I'm using this for blurts too. They can't write what they REALLY want me to know and put it in there

So far, Miss T has received a wide range of messages. Some are from students feeling sad or bullied while others are sweet notes sharing how much their teacher is loved. The mailbox is also for “blurts,” things that kids want to say in the middle of class but shouldn’t. Although each message she gets is different, they all make one thing abundantly clear: Kids want and need safe outlets to express themselves in school.

A small note is sat on a counter. The note reads: Everyone is making fun of my backpack

Text on the image reads: This helps because they may not always have the confidence to come verbally tell you what's going on. This was written anonymously and I addressed bullying HARD as a whole group. I shared stories of times I felt bullied and was a bully too. We haven't had any problems since

Teacher’s Clever Mailbox Idea Helps Students Express Their Feelings in the Best Way

In a social media post, Miss T shares some of the most impactful messages she’s gotten. She also shares some of the sweetest, noting that students will create adorable drawings for her.

A colorful drawing made by a kid. There's a recreation of the house from "Up," balloons and all. A message reads, "Miss T you are the best teacher ever."

“I think this mailbox may save lives,” Miss T shares alongside a message from a student who wishes someone would sit by them. “I get to read their thoughts they may not be willing to share.

A piece of paper with a small rainbow on it. There's also this handwritten message: I want to sit by someone but nobody want to sit by me

Text on the image reads:

I think this mailbox may save lives. I get to read their thoughts they may not be willing to share. This made me aware that some kids were overlooked and not often chosen. I reevaluated some seating charts and made some friendship/acceptance lessons to combat this feeling.

“This made me aware that some kids were overlooked and not often chosen,” she continues. “I reevaluated some seating charts and made some friendship/acceptance lessons to combat this feeling.”

Miss T is already blown away by the positive impact this mailbox has had on her students. Now, other teachers are being encouraged to create similar systems. How cool is that!?
