Pope Francis smiles as he goes on a ride in the popemobile

As millions of people around the world mourn Pope Francis, they are also reflecting on the immense impact he had on the world. That said, did you know that Pope Francis helped write a children’s book? Two of them, in fact. The first is titled Dear Pope Francis and was published back in 2016. The book features 30 questions from children who hoped to get answers from the pope himself. Each one is followed by a response from Pope Francis in the form of a letter.

According to an official description of the book, some of the questions these children asked are on the humorous side. Others, however, allowed Pope Francis to touch on more complicated, serious topics. One even lead to the reveal of what seems to be the one mystery he wished to have solved. Below, you’ll find the page with the child’s question.

Dear Pope Francis,
If you could do 1 miracle what would it be? Love, William.

Although William is only a 7-year-old boy, he manages to think of quite an amazing question: “If you could do 1 miracle, what would it be?” It’s easy to imagine that, when asked this question, Pope Francis had to take a moment to consider the options. But in the end, he seemed rather confident in his answer.

In a Letter to a Child, Pope Francis Reveals the One Miracle He Would Have Performed, if Possible

“I would heal children,” Pope Francis wrote. “I’ve never been able to understand why children suffer. It’s a mystery to me. I don’t have an explanation.”

Typed letter from Pope Francis that reads:

Dear William,

I would heal children. I've never been able to understand why children suffer. It's a mystery to me. I don't have an explanation. I ask myself about this, and I pray about your question. Why do children suffer? My heart asks the question. Jesus wept, and by weeping, he understood our tragedies. I try to understand too. Yes, if I could perform a miracle, I would heal every child.

Your drawing makes me think: there is a big, dark cross, and a rainbow and the sunshine behind it. I like that. My answer to the pain of children is silence, or perhaps a word that rises from my tears. I'm not afraid to cry. You shouldn't be either.

Pope Francis goes on to explain that, while he doesn’t understand why children suffer, he does know that expressing your emotions is good. In fact, he admits that he’s “not afraid to cry.” Best of all, he makes sure to tell the child that they, too, should not be afraid to cry.

“Flipped through this book last year because I expected it to be cute and funny,” Julie Dupaya, the person who shared these pages online writes. “Never thought I would cry over a children’s book but the page I cried over affirmed me that it was okay to cry.”
