IHOP made the news a few times in 2018, but this latest story is the sweetest of them all.

One October evening, college student Jake Guthrie was eating at the IHOP at West Virginia University’s Evansdale campus in Morgantown, West Virginia. As he and his buddies waited for their food, they spotted the iconic bottles of syrup that adorn the tables of the famous pancake restaurant and decided to have a little bit of fun.

“Ya know it’s funny, me and my friends were just having a conversation, and I looked over at the syrup and said, ‘this should be a chorus singing a song,’”Jake explained. “And my friends looked at me like I was crazy, but when I had the song pulled up, and I was making them sing, they were all on board.â€

Using the syrup bottles as the “singers,” Jake and his friends played Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and had the bottle sing along. The effect is nothing short of hilarious.

While the video looks simple, Jake said it took a few tries to get things just right.
“It wasn’t difficult to pull off. I had all the choreography in mind,”he said. “My friend, Gonzalo, insisted on doing the puppetry. The video took several takes to get it right, due to wrong syrups singing the wrong line or even our waitress coming back.â€
Naturally, the waitresses at IHOP have already seen it all, so no one stopped the young men from their goofy shenanigans. Once they’d finished their show and their meal, Jake uploaded the clip to Twitter. He never dreamed the video would get over 1.5 million views in just a few days!

“I was so surprised how this all blew up, people commenting that I made their day gave me such a warm feeling,”he said. “It’s so cool that people [think it’s so] funny that they make their own. Who knew it’s what America needed?â€
