A Great Dane wearing a prosthetic front leg.

This Great Dane may have three legs, but it’s not going to hold them back — especially now that they have a new prosthetic! 3D Pets, an animal prosthetic provider, shared one of their coolest new creations on social media. It’s a 3D-printed elbow for dogs that actually bends! In a fascinating video, the company demonstrated how it works.

First, a team of humans strapped the Great Dane into a harness, to which the prosthetic front leg was attached. Once it was secured, the pooch could stand much more comfortably. It also looked like the bending elbow feature was extra useful for lying down!

According to 3D Pets, this newly printed item was their “largest 3D printed folding elbow.” This isn’t surprising, since the three-legged Great Dane in the video looked like a pretty big patient!

There were quite a few questions in the comments section about how this pooch would get used to wearing a prosthetic leg. Some users pointed out that many dogs actually thrive on three legs. Wouldn’t it be more of a hassle for this Great Dane to learn how to walk using this device?

Here’s how prosthetics can help a three-legged dog.

In an FAQ on their website, 3D Pets explains that dogs with missing legs have to put a lot more weight on their remaining limbs. This is especially true for pups like this Great Dane who only have one front leg! Eventually, this situation can lead to more health problems. So, it’s better for the pet to wear a prosthetic limb that can help carry their weight more evenly!
