It’s been over four years since fans of the hit procedural have seen Reid help the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit bring justice to the world’s most twisted serial killers. The brilliant agent bid farewell when the original series concluded in 2020. And while most of the team came back for the Criminal Minds: Evolution reboot two years later, Reid has been away on “a special assignment.”

Fans have been begging for Spencer Reid’s return, and he finally heard their calls. According to an interview with the Italian publication Ansa, filming has already wrapped up. Now, we just have to wait for the next season to kick off.

When asked what he’s been doing recently, Matthew Gray Gubler said, “I shot a new episode of Criminal Minds” before adding, “I’m working on a film about Halloween, and I’m doing shows, comedies in theaters around America.”

“Criminal Minds: Evolution” Will Be One Of Matthew Gray Gubler’s First Appearances Since 2021

Matthew’s last acting role was in 2021 when he starred in Season 2 of Doll Face. Following that apperance, he took a break and told Good Housekeeping that he would eventually go back to work, but he didn’t know when he’d be ready.

“I am sure I’ll go back to comedy and to acting and all of that,” he said in 2023.” I’m just not sure when, but I know I look forward to it. I really love doing everything.”

Matthew Gray Gubler stepping back into the Criminal Minds universe as one of his first gigs was the last thing fans expected. But they’re thrilled nonetheless. When he’ll appear is still a mystery. Neither Matthew nor anyone with the show has shared what episode or episodes will include his guest role.

New episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution are expected to premiere on Paramount+ in early 2025.
