Close up of John Oliver smiling as he gives his Emmys speech

Some speeches are humorous while others come from the heart. In true John Oliver fashion, he found a way to make his Emmys acceptance speech both. The comedian’s show, Last Week Tonight, won in the category of outstanding scripted variety series. This show first premiered in 2014 and has since earned an impressive 30 Emmys in that time. Still, Oliver’s speech from Sunday night may be his best ever.

To start off his acceptance speech, Oliver gives thanks to a list of people you’d expect. Then, just before it’s time to leave the stage, he admits to having one more “very silly” person to acknowledge. Well, “person” isn’t accurate, actually… see who Oliver thanked in the heartwarming video below!

John Oliver’s Humorous Acceptance Speech at the Emmys Comes From the Heart

Oliver thanking his dog may seem silly at first, but things take a serious turn… right when the music starts to play, signaling for him to leave the stage. But getting “pushed” off the stage doesn’t deter the comedian. He uses it as a way to incorporate humor into the moment, despite the fact it’s clear that talking about his late dog makes him emotional.

The music is quickly turned off, however, and Oliver is left to give thanks to a dog that changed not only his life, but the life of his entire family. This is something that anyone with a pet understands deeply.

“The fact he got them to turn off the music so he could honor her memory,” one fan notes in the comment section of the video, with another adding, “It’s not silly, it’s love, it’s grief.”

“Jon Stewart’s face! He totally gets it,” a third person shares, pointing out Stewart’s reaction from the audience. “When he spoke about losing his dog on his show, I BAWLED. Just when I think I can’t love these men even more…”
