Last year, high school seniors around the world had their graduations and other end-of-year traditions canceled due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Many cities have been looking to make up for that fact this year, including Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Determined to have a formal prom, Anderson County High School took over Main Street so their students could dance the night away under the stars!
It was the school district’s superintendent who came up with the idea after COVID-19 made it difficult to hold the event indoors. The city quickly joined in, transforming their historic downtown shopping area into a twinkling outdoor paradise for the 500 teens who had purchased tickets.
The road was blocked off for the night, and hardworking crews hung white sparkling lights overhead and set up tables and chairs, a dance floor, and even a small stage area.
Students showed up dressed in their finest formal wear, ready to have a great time! Many even borrowed sports cars and big trucks to show up in style, and the event went far beyond the intended end time because everyone was having so much fun.
The unique dance was especially poignant for the teens because it has been such a tumultuous year. They weren’t even sure they would get to have a senior prom, let alone something that looks like it belongs on a movie set!
Mayor Troy Young said the event was a bigger success than they could have imagined.
“It’s the only prom I’ve attended that, when it was time for the prom to be over, there were 300 still dancing in the street,” he said. “The kids were so appreciative, so respectful, and they just really enjoyed the night.”
The event was such a big hit that the city plans to keep this new tradition alive for future generations. Planning for Main Street Prom 2022 is actually already underway!
Why didn’t we think of this?! This is such a great way to provide a safe, magical evening for the students who have missed out on so much.
